Starting a business is an adventure, no doubt about that. Along the way there are twists and turns, bumps and roadblocks, success and surprises. After writing my most recent quarter review and sending it off to my mentor, I realized owning a business provides you with some of the best life lessons. Here’s what I’ve figured out so far:

  1. It’s smart to seek advice, but always best to listen to your intuition and figure out what you really want.
  2. It doesn’t have to be hard for it to work or be successful… when things are aligned and meant to be they happen easily and gracefully.
  3. NEVER do something that doesn’t feel right or aligned with your purpose or mission. It will screw you over in the end anyways.
  4. Communicate honestly and lovingly, always. And address things as things come up.
  5. Things don’t have to be perfect before you put them out into the world.
  6. Choose to work with (and be around people) that bring out your best, and add to your experience. Honor, but chose to free yourself from, those that are negative or troublesome.
  7. It’s not only okay to ask for help, it’s admirable to say: “I have no idea how to do this. Would you be open to helping me with it?”
  8. It’s okay to figure things out as you go.
  9. Have a plan, but remember that not everything will go according to the plan.
  10. Walk your talk by being who you say you are. Inspire people by being the person you are.
  11. Always look for the best in others, and assume they are doing their best… then you will attract their best!
  12. Investing in self-care and time off is beyond valuable for personal and business success.
  13. Connections are one of the most valuable currency there is. Make them, keep them, and continue to develop them.
  14. Take time to look back at accomplishments, and celebrate them whenever possible.
  15. Learn from mistakes, but don’t beat yourself up about them. You did your best given your level of knowledge and consciousness in that moment.
  16. Dream big, and believe its possible. Who cares what other people say is possible, let their doubt be their issue.
  17. Be open and accepting of big success and big failure.
  18. Learn to value your time for what it’s worth. Know when to say yes, and when to say no.
  19. Be clear, and often state what you want. That is the best way to get it.
  20. Always stay true to who you are.
