Suit Up: 3 Tips for Wearing Stylish Suits

Posted January 4, 2013 by Baaba Grant-Acquah in Building Your Brand
There was a time in my career when I needed to wear a suit to work every day, so learning stylish and unique ways to wear a suit was a necessity. Although I no longer wear suits to work everyday, I still enjoy incorporating them into my work looks. Here are three tips that helped me back then and still help me today:

  1. Make sure it’s a good fit. Nothing ruins a great suit more than when the fit is too big or too tight. No need to go for the boxy 80’s look! Make sure your suit is a good fit for your body’s shape. I love to accentuate my shape with a well-tailored blazer and pencil skirt.
  2. You don’t have to wear the same suit pieces together. Keep the fabrics similar and try a different blazer with other suit pants. I would often buy multiple blazers and just swap out the bottoms of my pant suits and skirt suits.
  3. Personalize your suit. Wear a colorful or print blouse under your suit. Adding a statement necklace or earrings to the look can add instant style. Don’t feel that you can’t have fun with a suit. There are a lot of suits with great detailing and stylish accents available. So find one that fits your taste.

Gone are the days when only executives, lawyers, bankers, and politicians wore suits to work. Suits can be worn in almost any industry. Even if you feel that the suit look is not for you, try a more casual suit look — you just might like it.
