The 7 Most Influential People

Posted December 26, 2012 by Rebecca Niziol in Life After Five

In the hustle in bustle of the holiday season, I very rarely get around to cards. I don’t know about you, but I’m always amazed at the organization of people who send out adorable holiday cards with photos by the first week of December. If that is you, can you tell us your secret? I can barely get around to buying everyone’s gifts by December 25th.

As an alternative, I’ve started this powerful practice: The Big 7.  Simply thank seven of the most influential people in your life. It’s fun for you and powerful for the recipient. The best part is, you don’t even have to start until after Christmas.

Step 1: Pick your Big 7. These are the seven most influential people from the past year. They touched your life in a unique way, changed your circumstances for the better, or simply continued to be one of the most important people in your life again this year.

Step 2: Assign a person to each day between Christmas and New Years.

For example:

  • December 26th: Jill
  • December 27th: Chris
  • December  28th: Melissa
  • December 29th: Kelly
  • December 30th: Scott
  • December  31st: Dad
  • January 1st: Jacqueline

Step 3:  Decide your plan of action. You can keep it really simple, or get really creative. Pick one way you’d like to express your gratitude towards each person.

A few ideas:

  • Write a personalized card. (They’ll enjoy your surprise note after the holidays!)
  • Call them.
  • Make them something: food, products, albums, whatever your heart fancies.
  • Create a video. Send it privately or post it to YouTube.
  • Send a unique gift.
  • A big hug, short sentiment in person, and sincere “Thank you.”

Step 4: On each day, take some time to reflect on your past year and how that person positively affected you and your life. You may want to write that down, or simply sit quietly and revel in the fond memories.

Step 5: Complete your actions with love and care. Express your thanks freely, with no return needed or expected. Enjoy the feeling of telling someone how much your truly care.

Follow this simple plan to end 2012 generously giving thanks. Then get excited for 2013 and the next Big 7 it will bring you!
