A New Kind of Holiday Sharing — Nail Polish Style!

When you (or perhaps your friend) open up your medicine cabinet, what do you find? If you’re anything like me, it might be Q-Tips, maybe Ibuprofen, different kinds of lotions, and…nail polish. Dozens of bottles of nail polish.

If you think about it, how often does one actually finish off a bottle of nail polish? Unless you’ve found your color and never change that up, the answer is likely, well, never. Yet, we go to the stores in search of the high-end brands, maybe pick up some colors as an impulse buy at our local drugstore, checking out all the new colors we can’t wait to show off on our fingers and toes. We go home, use them, admire a job well done, and put them in the medicine cabinet.

Have you ever stopped to think about how much money is in that medicine cabinet full of nail polish? Or, if you prefer to have your nails professionally pampered, how much money we spend picking out colors from other mostly-full bottles of polish sitting in a salon? I personally buy super inexpensive polish, so my cabinet isn’t that pricey…but a new start-up may just change my mind about it all together.

Meet Lacquerous. As Lorraine Sanders from Fast Company calls it, Lacquerous is the “Netflix for nail polish,” Lacquerous offers a polish-sharing service similar to the movie-rental giant’s model. Go online, pick out three nail colors from over 50 shades — high-end shades, at that (Chanel, Tom Ford, Dior, etc.) — use at your leisure, and return when you want, all for $18 a month. While this price may seem like a lot to those of us thrifty folks, I am actually intrigued just to be able to try out some truly designer nail polish.

If you’re concerned about hygiene — eww…who exactly am I sharing this with? — don’t be. Nail polish is a hard breeding ground for germs, and Lacquerous has already reassured its potential customers by saying that they will inspect each bottle upon its return to make sure it isn’t contaminated…which is more than your favorite salon does, to be sure.

So, Career Girls, stop pining over that hard-to-find color you saw on Instagram or Pinterest and check out Lacquerous, which launched last week. You can feel good about supporting a women-owned start-up business while also indulging in your luxurious side…for a fraction of the cost.
