Honoring Women on Memorial Day

Posted May 27, 2013 by Marcy Twete in Leaders We Adore

Memorial Day is all about honoring the incredible men and women who serve in the American Armed Forces. But in our honoring today at Career Girl, we want to be sure we remember that both men and women serve in our Armed Forces. This, from the National Women’s History Project:

Many of their contributions have been forgotten and are not recorded in today’s history books. The Women’s Memorial at Arlington Cemetery is changing this omission through a massive oral history and research project.

Numbers: Women in the Armed Forces

  • There are currently 214,000 women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, approximately 15% of the total Armed Forces.
  • There are over 118,000 women in the reserves and over 400,000 women in the National Guard today.
  • There are over 1.8 million women veterans in America.

When you’re thinking about our Armed Forces on this Memorial Day, think too about those 1.8 million women who fought and served bravely for our country.
