How to Lose Weight? Use Sidewalks.
I gained 5 pounds in 3 weeks.
Me. The always skinny, always active, always health-conscious back-pain specialist. The girl who actually loses weight in food-focused Italy. The one who went months without a workout due to low iron, and didn’t gain an ounce. I gained 5 solid pounds in just 3 weeks. And no, it was not intentional. You know what happened?
I now live in a neighborhood with NO sidewalks! It’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. Within 2 miles of me, there is a fantastic running trail through a beautiful forest, my gym, various cafes and restaurants, and countless other things to increase my quality of life. But there is absolutely no way to get to any of them except by car.
Not only are there no sidewalks, there are no shoulders. Riding a bike here, in this hilly terrain with all of its blind turns, would be suicide.
If you live in a place with sidewalks—even better, sidewalks that actually lead somewhere—please use them! I am clear evidence that walking during your day can ward off weight gain better than anything else. Those three months when I battled low iron, all I did was walk and bike. Without those options, apparently all hell breaks loose.
Now I’m just grateful my time living in this location is limited. By mid-December, I’ll be in a walker’s heaven, sidewalks and places-to-walk-to galore. Wish me luck in the meantime. Looks like I’ll be driving to the gym more often. Grhmph.
