After a weekend of personal care appointments (PCAs, as my beau refers to them), which included ripping hair off my body with hot wax, pore extractions, and a bit of semi-toxic hair coloring, I paused to reflect on my current beauty upkeep.

Gee, I thought to myself, Is all this really necessary? I avoid the dentist because it might hurt, yet I’m perfectly willing to let someone tear hair off of me all in the name of good grooming. I know I’m not alone in this beauty endeavor, so I conducted detailed research to trace the origins of our pain-seeking, potentially harmful ‘beauty rituals.’
