Remember that time you ate too many chips and guac, and subsequently felt you could combust? Or, when you drank yourself into oblivion, and woke up the next day with a headache that felt like ninjas attacking your brain? It safe to say we’ve probably all experienced that moment of aftermath when indulging in excess. But, sometimes that weight isn’t just physical, it’s much deeper.
There is a heaviness that comes from not being aligned with your values, which manifest usually by not fully expressing yourself. The heated discussion with your dad, blowing off your best friend for that hot date, being late for everything, saying “yes” when you really want to yell “no”…. all of these things add up. And soon you feel a huge weight looming over you. It’s not a pleasant feeling, but it happens to all of us.
That’s when you know it’s time for a communication cleanse. No, I don’t mean abstaining from talking for a week, or giving up email and your beloved phone. Rather, clear up the things holding you back with authentic, honest, and open communication. Easier said than done. We are all doing the best we can in every moment, but from time to time we screw up a bit. Own up, take responsibility and rid yourself of that regretful black cloud that hovers over your heart.
The easiest way to begin is start taking action right now. You already know where you want to begin. Start with that one interaction that you can’t seem to let go of. Pick up the phone, write that email, set up a meeting. Speak from your heart, be kind, and express gratitude for whomever is the recipient of your communication clearing session. If communication with that person is not an option: write them anyways, and then release your letter into the world in an unaddressed envelope.
This exercise can be hugely powerful. And you can repeat the communication cleanse whenever needed. Soon that cloud will lift, the weight will drop off your shoulders, and you’ll feel free or open. You’ll feel like yourself again. So, lighten up!
