Long-Lasting Makeup Choices

If you ever watched Beverly Hills 90210 (the original, not the remake), you’ll remember the moment during the David and Donna radio show where Donna catches a glimpse of herself in the mirror and says something to the effect of, “Ladies, it’s 11am, where does the makeup go?” If the age old question all women ask at one time or another. Makeup goes on before work and somehow, at some point throughout the day, it’s just…poof…gone.

How, then, do we all keep our makeup on our faces and avoid the dreaded “where did it go” moment? The key is choosing products that last. We’re giving you Career Girl Network’s recommendations for the best makeup to stay on your face. And to make your shopping even easier, we’re giving you the drugstore and the high end version of each recommendation.

  • The key to long-lasting makeup is to start with a good base. To really stick, you need a good primer.

Our favorite high end primer is the Prime Time from Bare Escentuals. It’s light enough that it doesn’t feel like a sticky moisturizer on your face, but keeps makeup in place all day long.

It might sound weird, but you’re going to want to trust us on this drugstore choice. It’s Monistat’s anti-chafing gel. It’s a gel that dries like a powder and it’s ten times better than any other primer. And cheaper – at only $7 a tube, it’s a steal.

  • Your eyes will stand on their own, but again, only if it starts with a good primer. Here are our favorites.

Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion is the best on the market, truly the best. It doesn’t crease, it stays all day. But at $20 a tube, it’s a bit on the spendy side.

At about half the price of the Urban Decay option, this Cover Girl ShadowBlast isn’t a primer, but a shadow. But if you buy it in the beige color, it can act as just as good as a primer as the Urban Decay. Put any other color on top of it, and you’re all set.

  • When it comes to eyeliner, the key is a soft stick that lasts forever. Rubbing on a horribly hard liner isn’t good for your eyes, and it definitely won’t last.

We go back to Urban Decay for what is literally the best eyeliner ever made. It’s the easiest to apply and the longest lasting liner we’ve ever seen. Even to line your water line, you’re set with this one. And it comes in every color under the sun. Get it!

For a bit cheaper option, go with Ulta’s Automatic Eyeliner. In many colors, it’s soft enough and lasts a longtime. It’s not quite as precise for your water line or corners, but it’s our favorite of the less expensive brands.

  • Your long-lasting look needs a great mascara. Because no one wants to look like a raccoon at the end of a day.

BADgal by Benefit has been our favorite mascara forever, but it only recently came out in waterproof. Amazing!

If you’re looking for inexpensive, old faithful Maybelline Great Lash is the best waterproof out there.

  • And finally, you need a great setting spray. And for our money, there’s only one option.

All-Nighter by Urban Decay is a spray you use to set your makeup. It’s never sticky, but somehow works wonders. The big bottle is $29, but for our money, we grab the $12 tiny bottle in the Ulta or Sephora checkout line. It will last for months!
