She Knows Everybody! Feature: Dawn Jackson Blatner
One of the most exciting parts of You Know Everybody! are Marcy’s interviews with ten incredible female executives. Each week this summer, we’ll highlight one of these incredible women and share with you their “Best of the Best Networking Advice” from You Know Everybody!
Today, we’re sharing with you an excerpt from our “She Knows Everybody!” section with Dawn Jackson Blatner, Registered Dietician and author of The Flexitarian Diet.
Dawn’s “Best of the Best” in Networking Advice
Marcy ended each of the interviews completed for You Know Everybody! by asking each woman to provide to the book’s readers her best networking tips and advice. Here are Dawn’s tips and tricks
- Longevity matters. She might be beautiful and young in the eyes of her clients, friends, and the world, but Dawn is careful to point out the fact that her career was not an overnight success. “I’ve been doing this for 15 years! It takes time.” You can’t allow yourself to get frustrated in your process and give up just because success doesn’t happen immediately. When you’re frustrated, think about Dawn working at Northwestern and asking time and time again for an opportunity. It took time (and sure, maybe a little nagging) to get even that first opportunity. It takes even more time for the next and the next. You have to be patient and willing to work hard, but also to wait it out.
- Make time. There are thousands of things you could do to enhance your career in addition to networking. You have bills to pay and jobs to apply for and family circumstances to consider. We get it! But you have to make time to network, no matter how hard it is. You find the time in your day to watch TV and get together with friends, so be sure you’re making time in your day to incorporate networking as well.
- Think about networking as “friend making” first. Dawn and I have known each other for a couple of years, peripherally, but not incredibly well. When she and I met on a more one-on-one basis, her exact words to me were “I just want to know you!” That kind of enthusiasm about getting to know someone is difficult to duplicate. Dawn says she thinks of all networking simply as “friend making.” Are you going out there and making friends and finding people you want to add to your network? If it scares you, then don’t do it with networking in mind. Just go into it looking to make a friend, and you’ll go far!
- Simplify. Dawn and I laughed together talking about people who simply can’t find a way to describe what they do without using big words and long descriptions. It’s not uncommon to hear a business owner say something like, “We’re kind of like the eBay of Groupon. It’s hard to describe.” One of Dawn’s best pieces of networking advice is to simplify, simplify, simplify. Sometimes, she says, when people ask her what she does, she just says, “I do nutrition.” It might sound too simple, but sometimes it’s easier than the long description. Don’t be afraid to be as simple as possible to find success.
