Tips to Stay Healthy at Work
Staying healthy at work can be tough and countless research studies link sitting for long periods of time to health concerns such as obesity and metabolic syndrome. Therefore, it is always better to use preventative measures, so here are a few tips to incorporate into your office life to stay healthy at work:
- Keep healthy snacks handy: Instead of running to the vending machine for chips or processed snacks, keep healthy snacks available and in clear sight. We recommend placing snacks such as fruit, nuts, and energy or protein bars in clear glass or plastic containers. For other snacks such as candy or chips, store them in opaque jars or boxes. As we all say, ‘out of sight – out of mind!’ so you’ll be less likely to choose them as your first option.
- Change up your workspace: Invest in an exercise ball chair. Use it correctly by sitting upright and not slumping over, and it will help engage your core at work and improve your posture. Another option is to create a standing desk. An easy DIY standing desk can be made by using a pile of books or small stool to raise your workstation to chest-height. But don’t overdo the standing; try aiming for 15 minutes upright each hour.
- Move throughout the day: Make it a priority to move more. Step away from your desk and computer throughout the day, this will be good for your eyes and your body. Go on a short walk during your lunch or stand up between meetings to stretch your legs.
- Encourage others to be healthy at work: Your office may already foster a work culture focused on good health. If not, create it yourself by encouraging others to join you on your lunchtime walk or packing healthy lunches and snacks. Some other ideas include signing your co-workers up for a company softball team, or getting a pedometer or other exercise-tracking device and challenge your co-workers to a steps-per-day competition.
